A Tim Nicholls-led Liberal National Government will progress a business case for a SEQ Very Fast Train network linking the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay.
Congestion in southeast Queensland is worsening and Annastacia Palaszczuk has no plan to fix it.
Queenslanders are sitting in growing traffic on the way to work and it’s taking longer to get back home to our families each evening.
Meanwhile, Labor’s Rail Fail means more commuters are returning to their cars because they don’t know whether the trains will turn up.
Labor’s budget statements show that in the morning peak 22 per cent of our roads have unreliable travel times, while in the evening 28 per cent of our road network is classed as unreliable.
In the evenings, 33 per cent of our roads are classified as unproductive – congestion is impacting on small businesses and commuters alike.
A major factor in the worsening congestion is the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s road funding cuts this year – $65 million slashed in southeast Queensland and $400 million ripped out across the state.
The LNP has a strong track record of building the congestion-busting infrastructure we need.
As part of an $8.5 billion, 10-year Action Plan we funded upgrades to the Bruce Highway including from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway and interchanges at Maroochydore Road and Pumicestone Road.
We funded the long-awaited Moreton Bay Rail Link (now Redcliffe Peninsula Line), constructed the first line of the Gold Coast Light Rail and completed the rail expansion to Springfield and the Northern Busway extension.
After years of delays, the previous LNP Government funded and started the Gateway Motorway Upgrade North project and the upgrade of Exit 54 on the Pacific Motorway at Coomera.
Other congestion busting initiatives of the LNP Government included:
- $280 million for rail overpasses at Robinson Road, Geebung and Telegraph Road, Bracken Ridge
- $55 million for additional lane upgrade to the Western Freeway between Toowong and Indooroopilly
- Additional lanes on the Centenary Highway
- Maintenance program for the ageing Riverside Expressway, and
- Increased capacity with the removing of T2 lanes on the Pacific Motorway between Klumpp Road and the Gateway Motorway and on the Gold Coast Highway.

We need to plan for the future growth in the state’s southeast – this proposal will open up new employment opportunities, enable Queenslanders to move to regional centres while still commuting to the capital and ease crippling congestion on the Pacific Motorway and Bruce Highway.
Increased connectivity from a Very Fast Train proposal would benefit major regional cities including Bundaberg, Gympie, Maryborough and Logan as well as Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
This is all about creating jobs, securing current jobs and congestion-busting for the next 10 to 20 years.
A Very Fast Train network proposal would address mounting congestion, housing affordability and unemployment in Queensland.
It would allow people and businesses to take advantage of the amenity and affordability of regions and smaller cities, while reducing the pressure on larger metropolitan centres.
A Very Fast Train network would help realise a 30-minute city concept for southeast Queensland – getting commuters home from work sooner.
This means you could live and play on the Sunshine or Gold Coasts, work in the Brisbane CBD and travel time would be only 30 minutes away.
The LNP’s business case will also consider emerging technologies, such as Hyperloop, in progressing high-speed rail for southeast Queensland.
We will make the business case public and have a conversation with Queenslanders about the merits of such a project.
While the study is underway, it is vital that we build more traditional road and rail infrastructure – and that’s what the LNP will do.
Following the Federal Budget, the LNP wrote to the Federal Government seeking support from the $20 million Faster Rail Initiative to kick-start a business case into this proposal – the State LNP team is committing $2.5 million towards the study.
Only the LNP will build the congestion-busting infrastructure Queensland needs.
