Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner - Better Queensland

Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner

A Tim Nicholls-led Liberal National Government will deliver a Cross-Border Commissioner to help resolve issues which affect residents, businesses and non-government organisations who live and work close to the NSW, SA and NT borders.

The Problem

Cross-border issues and anomalies are present and the bane of many people’s lives on either side of the border, particularly the southern inland border areas away from major service centres.

The Queensland border is a line on a map to many communities which does not reflect their daily lives or habits. Whether you live in Currumbin, Killarney, Dalveen, Stanthorpe, Goondiwindi, Quilpie, Cammooweal or Birdsville, you interact with people in other states on a daily basis and often, your closest major service centre is often located in another State.

The daily realities of life, like property matters, tourism marketing, transport, licensing, departmental services and the sharing of information don’t stop simply because there is a line on the map.

Our Record

Only the LNP has been a constant supporter of border communities and understands the issues faced by these communities.

Our Real Plan

A Tim Nicholls-led LNP Government will create the position of Cross-Border Commissioner, to assist communities across Queensland in dealing with issues as they arise.

The Commissioner will be tasked with solving problems across the Queensland Government and will have a roving brief to coordinate with and across all departments.

The Commissioner will enhance intergovernmental co-operation and work with local Governments and other non-government organisations to consider, analyse and resolve issues.

The Commissioner will also develop and implement plans to prevent further cross-border issues and ensure that Ministers are properly briefed on the cross border implications of new or existing policies.

The Commissioner will be responsible for commonsense outcomes as part of the LNP’s plan to deliver better government, not more government and as part of our “New Deal” for regional Queensland.
